Transition to School
At The Lookout, we place a strong emphasis on preparing children for a confident and seamless transition to primary school. As part of our curriculum, we focus on child-centred learning and developing the essential skills that help children move into formal schooling with ease and readiness.
We believe independence is a vital skill from an early age, supporting resilience, persistence, and maturity. These qualities are embedded throughout our daily routines and planned experiences, helping children gain confidence in their abilities.
Early literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development are key pillars of our program. We foster positive peer interactions and equip children with strategies to navigate social situations effectively and respectfully. By celebrating each child’s uniqueness, we encourage them to express their emotions and build strong self-awareness.
Our comprehensive school readiness approach includes
- Regular excursions to local primary schools to help familiarise children with the school environment.
- A Transition to School guest speaker evening to support families with practical guidance and expert advice.
- Vision and speech screenings to ensure each child’s developmental needs are met early.
- Ongoing liaison with local schools to strengthen our transition to school program and ensure consistency for each child.
We work closely with families to understand and support each child’s individual strengths, needs, and cultural or linguistic background, ensuring every child’s diversity is respected and embraced.
Our school readiness focus is embedded across all areas of development throughout each day. Children are encouraged to extend their knowledge through their own interests, while educators gently challenge and support them to grow new skills.
We maintain open, ongoing discussions with families about their child’s development and readiness for school, supporting each family’s decision on when to start. We also provide clarity around NSW Department of Education and Training guidelines, which state that:
“Children must turn five by July 31 in the year they start Kindergarten. All children in NSW must start school by their sixth birthday.”
To further support families, we provide a Transition to School information package that includes practical tips, guidance on school readiness skills, and what to expect throughout the transition process. This resource is reviewed and updated annually to reflect the needs of our community and feedback from local schools.
At The Lookout, we are committed to ensuring every child embarks on their school journey feeling capable, confident, and excited for the next chapter
